Geomagic acquires Cadmus Consulting; names Dr. Tamás Várady chief technology officer

BUDAPEST, 21 October 2003 - Geomagic today acquired Cadmus Consulting LLC, a pioneer in new methods for computer-aided geometric design. Dr. Tamás Várady, former president and CEO of Cadmus, a Hungarian company, has been named chief technology officer of Geomagic.

Geomagic provides patented geometric modeling software that automatically transforms products from their physical form to a digital model for faster development, greater accuracy and automated inspection. The acquisition of Cadmus extends Geomagic’s software reach beyond the accurate replication of a physical product into the realm of stylish surfaces commonly used in automotive body design and consumer products.

“Geomagic is now the only company that can provide a complete set of tools for product development based on accurate digital representations of scanned physical parts,” says Ping Fu, the company’s president and CEO. “Our technology encompasses industrial styling, automated reverse engineering, custom manufacturing, and computer-aided inspection applications, all tightly integrated with existing CAD/CAM/CAE solutions.”

As Geomagic’s chief technology officer, Várady will direct the company’s technology roadmap and be responsible for managing research and development efforts. Várady founded Cadmus in 1991. He directed the geometric modeling laboratory for 20 years and now he is a senior research fellow at the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Várady is an international consultant on geometry modeling, and the author or co-author of 72 research papers, 53 of which have been published in refereed journals or conference proceedings.

“Our co-founder, Dr. Herbert Edelsbrunner, is one of the world’s foremost experts in what is known as discrete geometry,” says Fu. “Dr. Várady is one of the world’s foremost experts in a field known as continuous geometry. Rarely have two such experts been teamed together outside of academics. Not only have we acquired technology that gives us leading-edge software solutions, we are blessed with visionaries who have proven that they can transfer great research into great products.”

Cadmus will now operate as Geomagic Hungary, with Várady also serving as managing director of the wholly owned subsidiary. Engineers in the new subsidiary will become part of the Geomagic software development team and will provide technical support to European customers.
