Geomagic plug-in for Perceptron delivers instant visualization of captured scan data

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., August 20, 2004 -Geomagic announces a new plug-in that processes Perceptron scan data in real time and displays it as a solid shaded model.

The free plug-in is available directly from Perceptron and for downloading from the Geomagic web site at www.geomagic.com/support/downloads/plugin.php3. It is fully integrated with Geomagic Qualify computer-aided inspection and Geomagic Studio reverse-engineering software.

“The Geomagic plug-in gives our users a real-time visual window into the data capture process,” says Song Yop Chung, director of Perceptron’s Technology Components Group. “The speed and accuracy of the ScanWorks system will now be immediately visible on the screen, further reducing the time it takes to bring a model into the digital reconstruction and inspection workflow.”

Real-time display & filtering

The Perceptron ScanWorks system can capture more than 23,000 points per second with 50-micron accuracy. When teamed with the Geomagic plug-in, measurement data is immediately displayed on the screen as a solid polygon model. The plug-in allows users to see exactly what has been scanned, resulting in more complete data capture.

When not scanning, the software uses the Perceptron Contour Laser Scanning Probe as a 3D mouse, enabling users to interactively rotate the scanned object on screen to view it from different angles. The entire capture and display process can be conducted without using the computer keyboard or mouse.

The plug-in includes features that automatically filter scan data as it is being captured:

  • A real-time scan-line filter removes data not picked up accurately by the scanner, substantially reducing post-scanning clean-up time.
  • Noise reduction smoothes the surface of measurement line data in real time.
  • Uniform sampling provides an even distribution of points in 3D space; this is performed instantaneously when a user hits the pause button on the scanner.
Integrated with ScanWorks

The Geomagic plug-in is fully integrated with Perceptron’s ScanWorks software, which gives users the flexibility to use articulated arms from manufacturers such as Romer/Cimcore, Faro and Vectoron. Data is processed within a single software interface common to the plug-in, Geomagic Studio and Geomagic Qualify.

“We are extending the speed, accuracy and compatibility of the Perceptron system into the geometric processing realm,” says Ping Fu, Geomagic president and CEO. “Perceptron users now have a complete solution to reverse-engineer a physical part or inspect an as-built part against its CAD model.”

The Perceptron plug-in is another step in Geomagic’s quest to bring greater integration and ease of use into the data capture and processing market.

“We provide a standardized software platform for data measurement systems,” Fu says. “The plug-and-play interface makes it much easier and faster for users of any scanning or CMM hardware to get their data into the digital reconstruction and inspection pipeline.”
